Opposition
The opposition is the 180° aspect: two points stand directly across from one another in the zodiac. Astrologically it's traditionally read as two poles facing off.
In an opposition, two chart points are 180° of ecliptic longitude apart — they stand in opposite zodiac signs, for instance Aries and Libra. Astronomically, an outer planet in opposition to the Sun means it's closest to Earth and visible all night; the full moon is simply the opposition of Sun and Moon.
In interpretation, the opposition stands for polarity: two principles that face each other and make one another visible. Unlike the square, which is read as inner friction, tradition often describes the opposition as tension experienced through encounter and relationship — one end of the axis mirrors the other. The goal of the classical reading isn't one side winning, but balance along the axis.
Signs that oppose each other share the same orientation (both cardinal, say) and complement each other in element — the opposition is therefore not pure contrast but a complementary tension. It's no harbinger of misfortune.
